-- The public and loved ones will have an opportunity to pay tribute to a fallen Anderson County deputy.

Deputy Alex Burdette, 28, was trying to assist a driver with car problems on Highway 81 near Hayes Road on Friday.

Officials with the Sheriff's Office said that's when another driver hit him.

Witnesses said Burdette was thrown back 30 to 40 feet from the impact of the car. Burdette was airlifted by medical helicopter to Greenville Memorial Hospital from the scene of the accident.

Deputies said Burdette was on his way home at the end of his shift when the accident occurred.

Burdette had been with the Sheriff's Office for four years and was also a Marine veteran. He was a husband and father of two.

Visitation for Burdette will be Monday from 6 p.m. to 9p.m. at the McDougald Funeral Home in Anderson.

The funeral will be Tuesday at the Gethsemane Baptist Temple in Starr.
